Step-by-Step Guide: Attaching a Pass-Through Watch Strap and Managing Extra Length
Hey everyone, Nick here with BluShark Straps!
So, you just got a new watch, maybe for the holidays, a birthday, or as a gift to yourself, and you're not exactly sure how to install your new strap or, more importantly, what to do with all the extra strap length once it's installed. No worries! We'll explain exactly what to do in this step-by-step guide on attaching a pass-through watch strap to your watch.
What Are Pass-Through Watch Straps?
The straps we’re focusing on today are pass-through military-style (double-pass) straps. They’re a classic choice, loved for their rich history, exceptional durability, and secure fit. Unlike some straps that attach to both sides of the watch case, or pass underneath the watch only once, military-style pass-through straps are designed to slide though the spring bars and under the spring bars, creating a single, continuous loop. This loop enhances the strap's security, ensuring that even if a spring bar fails, your watch stays securely on your wrist.
You might notice these straps are longer than standard straps—this extra length is deliberate, allowing the strap to fold back and tuck neatly for an adjustable and versatile fit. Their design also makes them incredibly easy to swap, offering a quick way to refresh the look of your watch.
Installing Your Pass-Through Military-Style Strap
Installing a pass-through strap is easier than you might think, and the best part? You don’t even need to remove the spring bars. We’ve put together a quick video to show you exactly how it’s done. Check it out below:
What to Do with Extra Strap Length
Once your strap is installed and your watch is on your wrist, you might find yourself wondering what to do with the leftover strap length. Don’t worry—you’re not alone! When I first started working at BluShark Straps, I had the same question.
That extra length isn’t a mistake; it’s actually part of the design and functionality of a pass-through strap. The way you style it is entirely up to you, and there are a few popular ways to tuck the strap. Each method gives the strap a slightly different look, and some styles work better depending on the length of the strap.
Four Great Ways to Tuck Your Strap
1. Simple Keeper HoldThe excess strap is held securely in place by the two keepers without any tucking.
2. Under-Tuck
The strap is passed through both keepers, then looped and tucked underneath the second keeper.
3. Folded Double Pass
The strap is passed through both keepers, then looped back over itself and threaded underneath both keepers again.
4. Over Under
The strap passes through both keepers, folds back over the top of the second keeper, and finally back underneath the first keeper.

Final Thoughts
Experiment with these styles to find the one that suits you best. Whether you prefer a minimalist tuck or a bold folded look, the versatility of pass-through straps lets you make them your own.
