BluShark's Top 10 Affordables: #8 Timex Weekender

#8: Timex Weekender

 timex weekender affordable

The ubiquitous Timex Weekender can be had by just about any man. The consummate beater retails for around $25 and can be purchased at just about any department store. It won’t have the build quality of a more expensive watch, but for the price, it’s just fine. The biggest complaint you’ll (literally) hear is the excessively loud ticking of the seconds hand. The sound is a bit too much for my taste, but any list of great affordables would be remiss without the Timex Weekender.

Pros

  • Well-built and durable considering its price point
  • A perfect beater
  • Functional and most styles are versatile

Cons

  • Not particularly interesting
  • Window-rattling ticking noise

Specs:

Case diameter:

38mm

Band width:

18-20mm

Movement:

Quartz

Crystal:

Mineral crystal

List price:

$45ish

Can be had for:

BluShark's Top 10 Affordables: #9 Seiko Recraft Series

#9: Seiko Recraft Series

 Seiko Recraft

This selection may not be popular with many. This is definitely a polarizing choice and probably not a watch you’ll find on many “top affordable” lists. As I hinted at, I think Seiko is a great brand and I particularly love their designs from the 70’s. I’m not going to get into details on this one. If you love it, it’s for the style, not the specs; the same goes for those who hate it.

Pros

  • Reliable movement
  • Retro styling of 70’s Seiko
  • Cushion case

Cons

  • I’m not a big fan of the leather quality
  • Cannot be hand-wound
  • Polarizing design

    Specs:

    Case diameter:

    43.5mm

    Band width:

    24mm

    Movement:

    Automatic – 7s26

    Crystal:

    Hardlex

    List price:

    $425

    Can be had for:

    $173 (Jomashop)

BluShark's Top 10 Affordable Watches: #7 Seiko SNZF17 "Sea Urchin"

    #7: Seiko SNZF17

     seiko snzf17 sea urchin

If you’re looking to buy your first automatic watch and you have $130 to spare, go to Google, search “Seiko Sea Urchin” and pick-up this offering from the Seiko 5 line. Calling it a near-perfect start watch is probably underselling it. With the style of a Submariner, The Sea Urchin is incredibly versatile with simple, but sleek styling, a reliable movement, and surprisingly good build quality. Will you mistake it for a $7,000 watch? No. Will it feel like much more than a $130 watch? Yes.

    Pros

    • Versatile
    • Durable
    • Solid movement
    • Looks great on a variety of straps
    Cons
      • May lack some of the refinement of a more expensive watch
      • Many don’t love the “Seiko 5” logo on the dial

        Specs:

        Case diameter:

        44mm

        Band width:

        22mm

        Movement:

        Automatic - 7s36

        Crystal:

        Hardlex

        List price:

        $325

        Can be had for:

        BluShark's Top 10 Affordables: #10 Casio Edifice

        #10: Casio Edifice (EQS-A500B-1AVCR)

         Shark Straps - Casio Edifice

Casio’s Edifice line is very popular among the affordable community and for good reason. They’re incredibly durable, super accurate, and highly functional. A great option if you’re looking for a more mature version of a G-Shock. Still, it does have its limitation, including an incredibly busy dial that many won’t be a fan of and mineral crystal glass instead of sapphire. As far as straps, I personally like the rubber one it comes with, but this could definitely work well on a red and black striped Shark strap.

        Pros

        • Well-built and durable
        • Solar atomic quartz is highly accurate
        • Highly functional
        • Attractive styling

        Cons

        • Busy design won’t work for all
        • Sportiness limits its versatility
        • Mineral crystal glass

        Case diameter:

        45mm

        Band width:

        22mm
